Consonantly Speaking's Favorite iPad Apps to Use in Speech-Language Therapy Sessions 2012 Edition: Part 2

Here is the second post in the series of my favorite applications for the iPad in speech-language therapy. You can view the first post here. This post will encompass the remainder of therapy tools on my iPad as well as my favorites in the following categories (and more):

  • Receptive Language
  • Auditory Processing/Following Directions
  • Questions
  • Categorization
  • Story Sequence
  • Story Comprehension
  • Social Stories
  • Social Story Creators
  • Social Skills
  • Emotions
  • Idioms

Again, before I begin the long list, I want to write a disclaimer here. I do not believe that applications or software of any sort are a "cure" for speech and language disorders or that they should be used as the sole-treatment method. One should not use a speech and language application for therapy purposes without consulting with a speech-language pathologist or other qualified professional first whether it be for speech-language skill practice at home or therapy. Some applications should be used solely under the observation of the speech-language pathologist or other qualified professional. Applications and software for therapy purposes should be used as tools/materials for the speech-language pathologist to assist in remediation of communication disorders after reading information on how to use the application and appropriately use it under evidence based practice. Not many applications have been researched for use with people who have speech-language disorders and others are "based on" research but have not been researched themselves.

Favorite Social Story Apps - Due to the fact that there is a social story out there for pretty much everything and students' needs are different at different times, I am not going to choose a particular application. Thank you for sharing all your hard work!

Thanks! I really appreciate it!

What a super website, thank you

How much do you think you spent on these apps? Total?

The great thing about reviewing applications that are used in speech-language therapy on this website, is that many developers offer the app in exchange for the review. You will notice at the bottom of each of my reviews, there is a disclaimer section which states if I received the application from the developer to review or not. So far, I have not received any other sort of compensation, but most of the applications have been provided to keep to use with my students. Otherwise, I have used iTunes gift cards in which I have received as gifts, purchased applications on sale, and watched for App Friday apps that were for available for free. This does not mean that I haven't spent my own money on apps, because I have. Just that the price out of my own pocket was significantly less from watching out for deals/free apps.

Wonerful post thank you for sharing

Thanks so much! No problem!

Have you used See.Touch.Learn. by Brain Parade? You can create your own lessons for identifying nouns, verbs, pronouns, categories, what doesn't belong, colors, and others depending on how much time you spend with the app. Depending on if you get the pro version or not, it comes with various pictures and/or you can add your own. I really like the developer and have emailed with him a time or two. Thanks for the lists!

I have not used See.Touch.Learn by Brain Parade due to the fact that the Pro version is not in my budget. I do have the Lite version though. Thanks for the comment, I definitely want to look further into it now!

Have you looked at any early reading, or spelling, apps?
Thanks for the list...some new suggestions which I shall enjoy exploring!
Liz

I do not work on spelling with my students, so I have not looked at many spelling applications. I have reviews for the Simplex Spelling applications, iLiveSpelling, and Sight Words & Spelling With Pixopop and how they can be used in speech-language therapy. I am not sure how many early reading applications I have looked at, I think that many are pre-literacy/phonological awareness-related applications. I have a new application list coming out soon with language arts/literacy related applications that I have researched. I will have to explore this area more in the future.

Your organization is incredible! Wow, thanks for the inspiration. I have a measly 16g iPad, and so I can't keep nearly this many apps on my iPad at once, but this is my dream for when I'm able to purchase a larger iPad! :)

I just got a 16 GB iPad to use at school, so I feel your pain. However, that's what's great about the apps being in the Cloud. I can switch them out whenever I need to!

thank you. I am an SLP in a school system and we (13 SLPs) have been working on selecting apps this entire academic year with lots of frustration and confusion. I like how you present your categorized screens. I will look into your selections and provide you with feedback.
Many thanks, myoung@mpsd.org; marykathleenyoung@yahoo.com

I can understand the frustration! I've been so fortunate with this blog that many developers have allowed me to try their apps! It has taken a LOT of time to compare applications and decide which ones I prefer for which students. I would love to hear what decisions you make! Best of luck!

Thank you so much for compiling everything! I stumbled upon this article with 7 recommended apps for expressive language: http://www.putmebacktogether.com/Home/SpeechLanguagePathologyArticles/Sp...

There are SO many articles out there that recommend applications! In fact, I have compiled these into a list myself and also on a board on Pinterest. When I was researching for my application lists, I sorted through 50+ lists, and new ones come out every day! Thanks for sharing this article!

Thank you, have just bought an iPad so this is very helpful. I will be spending the rest of the day in the app store but will probably have to wait until the kids go to bed until I get a look in on the iPad!

I feel like I spend wayyyy too much time on my iPad! I'm glad I could help decrease that time a little bit for you!

I was just wondering what apps do you use just as motivators, other then the obvious angry birds and cut the rope. I find it hard to find games which have very quick turns.
Thanks :)

That is a REALLY good question! My students are ALWAYS asking for the Toca Boca apps (particularly Toca Hair Salon and Toca Kitchen Monsters) at the end of sessions. However, if you only have one iPad, it is a fight every time for how long a turn is and taking turns. Toca Tea Party and Birthday Party both involve turn taking and are a lot faster, plus, they are 2-3 player. If you have each student take a turn on one of the Dr. Panda apps by feeding an animal, doing an animal's hair, taking care of an animal's illnesses, etc. that would offer a short turn. In addition, I would definitely check out games including Uno, Yahtzee, and more. I hope these help!

Some really useful iPad applications that might replace the things you do daily with your laptop or netbook. With higher forecast numbers than expected, tablets will prove to be an even more essential connected device choice. Defining aspects of tablets stand to change as they become more popular, as will their accessibility to hopeful owners. More apps should be created for the educational purposes so that students can learn their topic through using their device. empresorium

Speech and language therapist are using this app for their patient's improvement. Recently I visited a SLT' Chamber with one of my friend's child and the therapist use this app during treatment. do my essay

Great info. I love all the posts, I really enjoyed, I would like more information about this, because it is very nice., Thanks for sharing.Gatwick Car Parking

This therapy its amazing aside from this very attractive display page, the article itself can be read into this amazing format you have created at your own specific taste. I get to read some important topics here which cannot be seen in any other place. besuchen Sie hier
